The canyon walls are carved in sandstone by  one hundred and ten springs, forming  dozens of caves  along its path.  Some of them, like "Dellenbaugh's Cave "  formed by springs of fresh water coming from underground or  dribbling from the walls.

The name of Cave Lake Canyon comes from   Frederick Samuel Dellenbaugh, a member of .the Colorado River Expedition led by John Wesley Powell.. Dellenbaugh took a picture of this cave and engraved his signature on the cave's wall marking  their discovery on January 25 1873 .
see HistoryDellenbaugh later put the picture in his book  " The Romance of the Colorado River " with the mention:
"A cave lake in a sandstone cliff canyon near Kanab, South Utah"
